Sitting isn't the enemy — sitting still, for hours, is. When your hips, spine, and shoulders stay in one position all day, they stiffen into it. A few minutes of movement, sprinkled through your day, keeps your body from locking up. Here are five you can do without leaving your desk.
Move a little, often
You don't need a gym or a yoga mat. The goal is to interrupt long stretches of stillness and gently take your joints through the range of motion they lose while you sit.
- Chin tucks. Gently draw your chin straight back (think "double chin") to reset forward-head posture. Hold 5 seconds, repeat 8 times.
- Seated cat-cow. Round and arch your spine slowly to wake up a stiff back. 8–10 slow reps.
- Shoulder rolls. Roll shoulders up, back, and down to open a rounded upper back. 10 reps.
- Seated figure-four. Ankle on opposite knee, hinge forward gently for tight hips. 30 seconds each side.
- Standing hip flexor reach. Stand, tuck your pelvis, reach the same-side arm overhead. 20 seconds each side.
"The best posture is your next posture. Movement beats stillness every time."
When stretching isn't enough
If stiffness keeps coming back no matter how much you stretch, it's often a sign of an underlying alignment or movement-pattern issue. That's where a structured assessment helps — pinpointing what's actually driving the tightness so you're not just chasing it every afternoon.
