What it is

Convincing the nervous system to let go

Here’s the secret about flexibility: much of what feels like a “tight muscle” is actually your nervous system applying the brakes. It holds a protective limit on how far a muscle is allowed to lengthen — and ordinary stretching mostly just argues with that limit. That’s why you can stretch your hamstrings for years and stay exactly as tight.

Contract-relax works with the reflex instead of against it. Your provider takes the muscle to its comfortable limit; you gently contract against their resistance for a few seconds; then you release — and in that release, the nervous system briefly lowers its guard, allowing the muscle to lengthen further than it would ever permit passively. Repeated through a session, the gains are often immediate and obvious.

It requires skilled hands and precise positioning, which is why it’s performed in-office only, by a TRUForm coach or doctor — and why it earns range that then gets locked in with strengthening, so the new flexibility becomes usable movement rather than a party trick.

Where it helps

Commonly used for

Stubborn hamstrings & hips

The classic tight zones that years of solo stretching never seem to change.

Restricted range of motion

Shoulders, hips, and necks that stop short of the range daily life asks for.

Neuromuscular guarding

Protective tension left behind after injury — long after the tissue itself has healed.

Pre-training range

Opening the exact range a rehab progression or sport movement needs, right before training it.

Desk-shortened muscles

Hip flexors and chest tissue adaptively shortened by years of sitting.

Flexibility plateaus

When your own stretching routine stopped producing change months ago.

Whether this fits your case is decided at your evaluation — every plan is built from your exam, not a menu. Individual results vary.

What to expect

A round, start to finish

1 · Position

Your provider takes the target muscle to its comfortable end range with precise positioning — the setup is half the technique.

2 · Contract

You push gently against their resistance for a few seconds — around 20–30% effort, never a max strain.

3 · Release & gain

As you relax, the muscle’s guard drops and your provider guides it into new range. Repeat a few cycles, and the gain is usually measurable on the spot.

Questions

Contract-relax FAQs

How is this different from regular stretching?

Regular stretching pulls against your nervous system’s protective limit; contract-relax uses a reflex to temporarily lower that limit. The gentle contraction before the stretch changes what your body allows — which is why gains that take months of passive stretching (or never come at all) often show up within a session. It’s the same principle behind PNF stretching used in athletic and clinical settings worldwide.

Does it hurt?

No — it should feel like productive effort, not pain. Contractions are gentle, positions are controlled, and you’re communicating with your provider throughout. Most patients find it satisfying: you can literally feel the range opening within a few cycles.

Why can’t I just do this at home?

The technique depends on precise positioning, calibrated resistance, and knowing which muscle — and which line of that muscle — is actually the limiter. That’s exam knowledge and trained hands. What you will get is a home program that maintains the range we earn together.

How fast will I see results?

Range typically improves within the session — that’s the nature of the technique. Making it stick is the real work: new range gets locked in with strengthening through your rehab program, so your body learns to own the motion rather than borrow it. Individual results vary.
