3 hydration mistakes Dallas residents make this summer

A Dallas summer doesn’t ease you in. Between the heat, the humidity, and the time we spend outdoors, staying active means staying ahead on hydration — and most of us are quietly getting it wrong.

Mistake 1: Waiting until you’re thirsty

Thirst is a late signal. By the time you feel it, you’re often already mildly dehydrated — which shows up as fatigue, headaches, and stiff, cramp-prone muscles. The fix is simple: drink on a schedule, not on a feeling. Front-load water in the morning and sip steadily through the day rather than chugging once you’re parched.

Mistake 2: Water alone, no electrolytes

When you sweat, you lose more than water — you lose sodium, potassium, and magnesium that your muscles and nerves depend on. Replacing fluid without replacing those minerals can leave you feeling flat and crampy even though you’re drinking plenty. On hot or active days, add an electrolyte mix (or a pinch of salt and some fruit) to a couple of your water bottles.

"Hydration isn’t just how much you drink — it’s what your body can actually hold onto."

Mistake 3: Letting caffeine run the day

Coffee and soda aren’t off-limits, but relying on them as your main fluid works against you in the heat. Pair every caffeinated drink with water, and be honest about how much of your daily intake is actually hydrating.

A simple summer routine

Start the day with a full glass of water, keep a bottle within reach, add electrolytes when you sweat, and use the easiest gauge there is: pale-yellow urine means you’re on track. Well-hydrated tissue moves better, recovers faster, and holds the gains you make in care and training.
